Seasonally Pasture Raised vs Pasture Raised
To legally use the term “pasture raised,” hens must have outdoor access year-round. In Michigan, freezing temperatures and snow make that unsafe for hens during winter months. That’s why Eat Local eggs are labeled seasonally pasture raised—a more accurate reflection of how our hens are cared for throughout the year. Spring, summer & early fall: Hens free roam outdoors and forage naturally Late fall & winter: Hens are moved indoors to stay warm and healthy Transparency matters—and we believe accurate labeling builds trust.
Feed & Land Practices
Our hens are raised on land free of chemical pesticides, including glyphosate (found in Roundup). Seasonal Feeding Approach Outdoor months: Hens forage naturally on pasture Winter months: Non-GMO corn and soy feed, free of chemical pesticides Alfalfa hay and grass mix are provided to mimic foraging behavior, allowing hens to peck, play, and stay active indoors This balanced approach supports hen health during colder months, when energy is naturally used to stay warm and molt—rather than egg production.
Yolk Color Transparency
Eat Local egg yolks naturally vary in color throughout the year—and that’s intentional. The industry-standard DSM YolkFan measures yolk color based on a hen’s diet, not nutritional value. Some producers add synthetic compounds to deepen yolk color year-round. Our farmers do not. Warmer months: Deeper-colored yolks from natural foraging Colder months: Paler yellow yolks due to seasonal feed What you’re seeing is honesty—not manipulation.
